About

Lloydlondon Architects is a design firm led by Luc Johnston and Nancy Chao. Our studio’s name is borrowed from our hometowns: Lloydminster, AB and London, ON. This name represents the dialogue of our collective memories, our experience coming together to create new ones, and our ethos of merging the humble and grand aspirations of original design.

We distinguish our practice by focusing on three guiding principles: context, experience, and material exploration. Taking inspiration from our clients and their project parameters, we develop a narrative that is unique to each project. We do not limit itself to the typical conventions of an architectural practice. Rather we strive for projects that blur the line between art, architecture, and building science.

With over 25 years’ experience, and working in both the US and Canada, we have completed projects in a wide range of sectors including: cultural institutions, residences, restaurants, wellness spaces, and offices. Lloydlondon Architects is registered with the Ontario Association of Architects. As such we offer a full scope of services from initial design concept, building permitting, construction administration, and everything in between.

LUC, OAA, RAIC, MArch

Luc completed his Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture degrees at Dalhousie University. His work experience includes such prestigious architecture studios as Fernau & Hartman Architects in Berkley, CA, Moriyama & Teshima Architects, RDHA and Ian MacDonald Architects in Toronto. Since co-founding Lloydlondon Architects in 2019, LLA has specialized and excelled in major additions and renovations of residential and commercial spaces.

This specialization allows for existing buildings to be turned into finely tailored and detailed spaces perfectly fitted to our clients needs. With hands-on experience as a carpenter and builder, Luc’s ability to leverage the very best of seemingly common materials and skilled trades to create truly unique and personalized spaces for clients within budget. His experience with complex building envelope detailing and design compliments his skills for spatial programming based on client requirements.

He approaches every project as a potential learning experience, and as such develops relationships built on a foundation of careful listening and humility. By prioritizing his relationships with clients and builders the design and build process becomes streamlined and transparent, creating better projects and satisfied clients.

NANCY, OAA, MArch, BAS

After completing her Bachelor of Architectural Studies and Master of Architecture degrees at Carleton University, Nancy began her Architectural career in San Diego, CA at the award-winning Luce et Studio. After relocating to Toronto, Nancy worked on significant cultural projects with Moriyama and Teshima Architects such as the The Aga Khan Ismaili Centre and Jamatkhana Community Religious Centre and with Gow Hastings Architects working on a multitude of Institutional projects across Ontario.

With a keen interest in fine arts, Nancy’s approach to architecture begins with a strong conceptual framework that informs the rest of her designs. Specializing in interior design and material finishes combined with 17 years of experience working in the industry, she confidently leads a project from schematic design through to the end of construction close-out. Building strong Client relationships through thoughtful listening and communication is key to Nancy’s successful project delivery process.
